The northern most part of the Outer Banks is located in Currituck County just below the Virginia state line. Where the land connects at the state line, there is no public access. The only access from mainland Currituck County is south on NC 158 to Dare county then north again through Duck.

The route may be strange, but the drive is worth it. Though the length of the Outer Banks' Currituck County is called Corolla, the little town of Corolla is just south of the end of the paved road. Well, no. It isn't at the state line. The 4 wheel drive area goes about 18 miles beyond the end of the road.

The 4 wheel drive area includes areas known as Corova Beach and Swan Beach. There is access for 4 wheel vehicles by driving across the dunes on to the hard packed sand. Best in low tide. It is wild and beautiful, almost uncivilized.

But be careful of the other adventurers who park along the beach in the 4 wheel drive area. And, P-L-E-A-S-E drive slowly. One of our most precious resources, our wild ponies live there. Don't approach. Don't chase. Enjoy them at a distance. And by all means, respect their right to survive.

If you don't stay in Corolla, at least visit. The quaint shops and stores are charming. The Corolla Chapel is a must see no matter your faith.

Don't overlook the Whalehead Club. The grounds are beautiful yet pale in comparison to the old hunt club. And, of course, you can't miss the Currituck Lighthouse. Take a climb. The sight from the top is fabulous.
