Kill Devil Hills is the most populated town on the beach and hosts one of the Outer Banks' main attractions - the Wright Brothers Monument. Kill Devil Hills, like Kitty Hawk, has 3 geographic areas - ocean front, between the highways and west side. The ocean front area of Kill Devil Hills has a mix of older cottages, newer homes, and condos. There are also many fine motels/hotels and restaurants here. The area between the highways provides vacation rental properties with an easy walk to the beach and many second and year round homes. As you drive the streets, you will find a great variety of homes with equally varying sales prices. The west side of Kill Devil Hills has many neighborhoods providing an easy walk to the sound or short ride to the beach. Some bicycle to the beach for easy parking. There are homes for weekly, monthly, and year round rentals. Many homes here on the west side are year round. Located in the center of the beach, Kill Devil Hills is attractive to many who like the activity and convenience provided by the many entertainment and shopping choices nearby. Check it out Colington Island is located just west of Kill Devil Hills. Though not a part of the town of Kill Devil Hills, it shares the same zip code. This is where any similarity ends. Turn west on Colington Road and get ready for some different sites. The first bridge will take you to Little Colington Island. You will see where many of our fishermen live. I should more precisley say many crabbers. You can tell by the crab pots stacked around. Enjoy the sites along this winding road. The next bridge takes you to the big Colington Island. Explore some of the roads here. There's one road just beyond the fire house that takes you to Baycliff. My first trip there years ago was awesome. I felt like I was going up a small mountain only to find the sound nearly level with the higher streets. Interesting! Driving further down Colington Road will take you to one of the lovliest spots on the Outer Banks. I shouldn't tell you that because this is a gated community. So what is so special about it if you can't see it? If you like living near the water or like to fish or boat. this just may be where you want to call home. There are fingers of canals with homes on each side. Then there is the harbor leading to the sound. (Check above for price range or Colington Island neighborhood to see properties and some photos of the area.)
