Listed below are many popular places to visit during your Outer Banks vacation. Some will call you back repeatedly. Others will be perfect for a rainy day. A few places are perfect for that once in a lifetime wedding. If you have a special interest and don't find a listing below, just contact me. If we don't know the answer, we know where to get it.

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge - For rugged outdoor lovers seeking to be a part of the best nature offers. Find endangered or threatened species such as the American alligator or American bald eagle. Oh, look for black bears. This is their home turf. Open all year in daylight. Your Pets' Outer Banks Vacation

We all love our pets and don't want to leave home without them. To assure their safety it's smart to know the rules.

Many rental cottages allow pets but various restrictions may apply. Be sure to check with your reservationist to locate the best home for your and your four legged family members. Why not see what Resort Realty's pet friendly rental homes offer?

Rules apply for animals on the beach, and each beach is different. The list of towns/areas below will help you:
Currituck County - Leashes required - no length requirement
Duck - Leash no longer than 10 feet. May play unleashed under close owner supervision.
Southern Shores - Leashes no longer than 10 feet. No animals are allowed on beach between May 15 to September 15.
Kitty Hawk - Between  10 am and 6 pm from the start of Memorial Day weekend until the end of Labor Day, the leash can not exceed 6 feet. At all other times the leash may be extended, but must be retractable to 12 feet. Well behaved dogs may play unleashed but at a distance not to exceed 30 feet from the owner.
Kill Devil Hills - Between 9 am to 6 pm from May 15 through September 15 no dogs are allowed on the beach, excepted for handicap aid. At other times the leash is not to exceed 10 feet.
Nags Head - Leashes may not exceed 10 feet, but leashed pets are allowed year round.
Manteo - Leashed pets are allowed on the waterfront year round with a leash not to exceed 6 feet.
Hatteras Island in Dare County and Ocracoke Island in Hyde County - Much of the beach is under the National Parks Service jurisidiction. Released statement: "Your pets are welcome at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Do keep them leashed and under control at all times. Pets are not allowed on designated swim beaches or in buildings. Please for your pets sake, do not leave them unattended. And, for other visitors sake, clean up after your pet." Leashes in national parks must be no longer than 6 feet.

There is a mandatory removal of feces law throughout the Outer Banks area. Civil penalties for voiolation of this law varies by township. Please clean up after your pet.

North Carolina state law requires pets to have a current up-to-date rabies tag. It is unlawful to fail to provide a collar or harness, with attached tag, which must be worn at all times.

 Shops        (in progress)

We have stores, shops, boutiques, to meet most every need. Let us know if you find a shop you would like to see added to this list.

Corolla - Look around the shops at TimBuck II and Monteray Shores Plaza. Go north past the Currituck Light to the old village shops in Corolla Village.

Southern Shores - The largest place is known by the Food Lion Store. There are other stores for food, necessary items, and helath care. Starbucks and Ritas will refresh you. Try Cosmos pizza or spaghetti.

Kitty Hawk - The largest shopping area here is around Wal-Mart. As you go south you will find many small shopping strips with some delightful shops to visit. Great restaurants along the way as well.

Kill Devil Hills - This area is best known for K-Mart and the Belk Department Store area. Stop my some of the smaller places as well. The movie theater is great for a rainy day.

Sports

Bike
Ride your bike to the beach, town shops or tour the length of the Outer Banks (about 120 miles) on our touring bike paths. In addition to the "bikeway" there are paths to take you to special destinations through some of our towns. See how we locals live. You may want to bike through the west side of the Wright Brothers Memorial or visit Manteo and the quaint waterfront.

Starting from the north in Corolla bike through Southern Shores on NC 12. From Kitty Hawk south through Nags Head you can follow Highway 158 or take the more leisurely Beach Road.  South of Nags Head you will be on NC 12 that takes you across the Bonner Bridge on to Hatteras Island. Ride through Pea Island Wildlife Refuge then through Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, and Hatteras Village. Rest a bit with a free ferry ride taking you to Ocracoke Island.

Remember to have plenty of water, but there are restaurants, shops, and places to stay along the way. During the tourist season, please watch out for heavy traffic. Remember that our tourists are not familiar with the area and often are looking for a destination, not you. Be safe and enjoy the beauty of this magical place.

For additional information see Wheels of Dare Bicycle Club.
